Lashania’s Story

August 2019

Lashania was living with a family member after losing her home, due to loss of income (SSDI Benefits). She was not there for long before being kicked out. She now lives between her car and hotel rooms with her children. At the beginning of this year she was re-awarded her SSDI Benefits after winning an appeal.

Lashania is from Tallahassee. She is a single mother and divorced. Since her divorce she admits that she has struggled with stability. She wants to change this by supplementing her income via obtaining part time work and/or going to school to prepare for job readiness. Lashania enjoys cleaning and housework. Her favorite music is Gospel music, because it keeps her inspired and motivated.

For what in life do you feel most grateful for?

She is most grateful that her and her children still have a strong bond regardless of their living circumstances. Her kids are very supportive and appreciate what they have and what she “can do” for them. Most of all she is grateful for their ability to understand.

Given a choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest and why?

An ideal dinner guest Lashania would like is her deceased mother. Her mother was her best friend and biggest supporter. She states she would like to catch her up on what’s going in her life and reflect on memorable moments they shared when she was alive.
