Advocacy

Ability1st is committed to empowering individuals with disabilities through individual and systems advocacy efforts. Advocacy, one of our core services, is central to the mission, aiming to educate and support consumers with the knowledge and tools they need to understand their rights, advocate for themselves, and effectuate change within systems that impact their lives.

Empowering Through Education

Our Advocacy service focuses on several key areas to ensure individuals with disabilities can lead more autonomous and informed lives:

Rights Education: Learn about the rights and protections afforded to individuals with disabilities under the law, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other crucial legislation.

Self-Advocacy Skills: Gain the skills and confidence needed to advocate for yourself in various settings, including education, employment, and healthcare

Navigating Systems: Receive guidance on how to work within existing systems to access services, accommodations, and support. This includes assistance with filing complaints, requesting accommodations, and understanding the processes involved in advocating for systemic change.

Who Benefits?

This Core Service is designed for individuals with disabilities, their families, and allies who seek to deepen their understanding of disability rights. Whether you’re new to self-advocacy or looking to enhance your skills to create broader systemic change, our service offers resources, education, and support tailored to meet your needs.
